Traumatic events and memories are known to be the cause of emotional distress thereby negatively impacting lives, families, and the ability to function in society. I am committed to initiating healing and alleviating distress by helping individuals process trauma or the painful memories associated with the traumatic experience.
Throughout my career I have worked with adults and children who have been exposed to harmful circumstances or traumatic events caused by incarceration, physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, domestic violence, victimization of violent crimes, disasters, caregiver neglect, adoption and foster care, and mental health issues,
My goal in providing trauma-informed counseling is to help individuals learn more about trauma and its effects on the body, identify triggers, and gain healthy coping skills to decrease negative emotional responses.
I am a licensed professional counselor and national certified counselor who specializes in working with children, adolescents, and young adults. Welcome! I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has been working in the field of mental health for over 7 years. I received my Master’s of Social Work from the University of Alabama in 2020. I am thrilled to be joining The Nest working with children, adolescents, and young adults. I also work with those who are involved in the juvenile justice system and the LGBTQ community. I approach each client using the “I thou” approach which means I relate to you as an authentic being, without judgment, qualification, or objectification. I meet you as you are. Being a Licensed Professional Counselor and Psychologist is the culmination and expression of my lifelong interest and concern for people. Beginning at Auburn University, where I majored in Sociology and double minored in Psychology, I started this journey. Upon graduation from Auburn, I became a social worker specializing in working with children and families who were not able to maintain adequate care for their children. In working with troubled families and children, I spent thousands of hours with my clients walking with them in their pain and helping them to heal. During this time I continued my schooling, obtaining a Master's Degree in Elementary Education at the University of South Alabama. Later in life, while devoting my time with my own son I was also able to obtain Master's Degree in Community Counseling and a Doctoral Degree in Psychology. As my son became older I was able to begin private practice in counseling and work as a social worker in a hospice setting. I was also able to counsel teens incarcerated in the juvenile detention center, spending many hours with them in their distress.
It is my firm conviction that people often do not appreciate their own worth. As they attempt to live up to expectations of family and society, it is difficult to take time to observe, understand, and nurture those talents that are uniquely their own. In sessions I employ Person Centered therapy with its emphasis on compassion and relationship along with reality therapy and encouragement. When combined the two therapies can be described as "truth with love." These therapies bring forth that positive, creative and incomparable inner drive that propels people towards their best outcomes. My clients have been able to come to a much deeper understanding and appreciation of themselves than they had achieved before counseling.
I am a licensed professional counselor in Alabama with over 20 years of experience. I've always had a desire to help people even as a little girl. My motto in life is "How can I help?" I have worked with individuals with a wide range of concerns including SUDs, anger issues, parenting/co-parenting problems, relationship issues, intimate partner violence, anxiety, depression, and physical/psychological trauma.
My therapy style is direct and interactive. I believe in building rapport in order to establish the therapeutic alliance within the first few weeks of therapy. I believe in treating everyone with respect, compassion, and genuineness. I prefer a variety of approaches to treatment such as cognitive-behavior therapy, solution focused therapy, and person-centered treatment just to mention a few. However, the approach selected will meet the individual exactly where they are. Treatment plan’s goals and objectives are formulated based on the individual’s strengths, needs, abilities, and preferences.
You are amazing! It takes strength and courage to invest in a more fulfilling and happier life. Thinking for a change will assist in gaining a new perspective and outlook. So if you are ready to take that step, then I ask,
"How can I help?
