Per the CDC, rates of depression in children have increased over time. Incidents of suicidal thoughts in teens, especially teen girls, have reached the highest levels ever recorded. If your child has shown a recent change in mood, behavior, appetite, or grades, or a decreased interest in activities, these changes can be indicative of depression. If your child or teen is engaging in self destructive or injurious behaviors, or any other behavior that makes you worried, please reach out.
More than 1 in 11 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with ADHD, making this one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in children. ADHD is characterized by inattention- with or without hyperactivity- and impulsivity that disrupts daily functioning. Children with ADHD often appear as more sensitive, have difficulty regulating emotions, and are more reactive to perceived criticism or embarrassment.
Anxiety in children can look like fear and worry, but can also appear as extreme irritability or even anger. It is important for parents to note any changes to their child's mood and behavior, and to discuss these with their medical provider or pediatrician. Anxiety in children can manifest as separation anxiety, social anxiety, general anxiety, specific phobias, or even panic attacks.
Children spend the majority of their time in a school-based setting. Any disruption to this environment can have lasting effects on self esteem, learning, and general functioning. Children with behavioral issues related to conduct often can benefit from further evaluation of learning disabilities or mental health concerns to receive the best support possible.
Children who suffer with anxiety and depression may also experience decreased self esteem or difficulty with social situations. Conversely, children who are bullied in school may also experience mental health issues. Giving your child access to a mental health professional, in an environment where they feel safe, can be a first step towards healing.
National statistics on childhood abuse are staggering-- it is estimated that 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys will be sexually abused before the age of 18, with the majority of abuse cases being perpetuated by a parent or family member. Children and teens who have been exposed to trauma-- through domestic violence, abuse, neglect, poverty, natural disasters-- can suffer life-long consequences if not properly addressed.
Play therapy is a unique therapeutic intervention, utilizing the way children naturally process their world and environment-- Play and creative expression--to address difficult symptoms or situations such as abuse or trauma. Play therapy helps the clinicians meet the child where he/she is at in terms of development and comfort level.
